Key Verse:
Genesis 18:14 (NASB 2020)
“Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
God asks this question because Abraham and Sarah lack faith in what seems impossible. They are old – God promised them a child – but Sarah has long passed the age of childbirth. What God promises does not align with biology, logic, or experience.
Yet God’s covenant has never depended on human capability.
Genesis 18 shows us that God specializes in what is impossible for man. He does not lower His promise to match human strength. He asks whether we will trust Him beyond it.
Immediately after this promise, Genesis 19 records the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The same God who brings life from a barren womb also brings judgment upon unrepentant wickedness. Mercy and judgment are not opposites in God’s character — they flow from the same holiness.
What is impossible for man is not difficult for God:
- A son from a barren womb
- Preservation of the righteous
- Judgment of entrenched evil
The question is not whether God is able. The question is whether we will believe Him when His word confronts our limits.
Faith is not trusting what makes sense. Faith is trusting God when nothing else does.
Romans 8:28 (NASB 2020)
“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Father, You are the God of the impossible. You speak, and creation obeys. You are the God who remains faithful even when we falter. You are the God that is worthy of our worship and praise.
Forgive us, Lord, when we limit you by our worldy knowledge. Teach us to trust Your word, even when the promise feels far beyond us.
Nothing is too difficult for You.
