Genesis 34–35 & Matthew 11 — Return and Rest

Sometimes the most honest thing to admit is that we drift. Not usually in some dramatic, obvious way.
Just slowly. Quietly. Almost without noticing.
Genesis 34 shows what happens when that drift goes unchecked. Things get messy. People act out of the flesh. Leadership gets passive. Consequences pile up. And what’s uncomfortable is that this is God’s people. Not outsiders. Not unbelievers. The family of promise.
Then Genesis 35 opens and God doesn’t thunder. He doesn’t shame. He simply says, “Go back to Bethel.”
Go back to the place where you first met Me.
Go back to worship.
Go back to obedience.
That’s grace.
Matthew 11 carries the same heart. Jesus doesn’t say, “Come to Me once you get your act together.” He says, “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened.” Not the strong. Not the impressive. The tired. The worn down. The ones who are done pretending.
That hits home for me.
Because some days I feel close to God, steady, grateful. And other days I feel distracted, dull, tired, even ashamed of how easily I drift. And yet Scripture keeps showing the same pattern: God doesn’t push away people who turn back toward Him. He meets them.
Not with a lecture. With an invitation.
Return.
Come.
Rest.
That’s not weakness, it’s mercy.
Prayer
Father,
We admit how easily we drift.
Thank You for not giving up on us when we do.
Teach us to return quickly, without pride, without excuses.
We come back to You again today.
