1.16.2026 – True Family is Obedience to God – 16/365 – Genesis 38–40, Matthew 12
“For the mouth speaks from that which fills the heart.”

“And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, ‘Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.’”
— Matthew 12:49–50
Jesus says something here that quietly dismantles a lot of assumptions.
He doesn’t define closeness to God by heritage, familiarity, or proximity.
He defines it by obedience.
The people closest to Him physically were not automatically considered closest to Him spiritually. That alone forces me to slow down when I read this passage. It means knowing Scripture, growing up around church, using Christian language, or even believing correct doctrine is not the same as actually living in submission to God.
Earlier in the chapter, He says something that connects directly to this: our words reveal our hearts. What fills us eventually shows itself.
If I’m honest, my words don’t always reflect patience.
My reactions don’t always reflect trust.
My thoughts don’t always reflect surrender.
Not because I don’t believe.
But because belief is easier than obedience.
Throughout the Gospels it’s clear the disciples weren’t perfect. They doubted. They misunderstood. They argued. They failed. But they followed. They listened. They submitted themselves to Jesus, even when it was slow, messy, and incomplete.
That seems to be what Jesus is pointing to.
Not perfection, but posture.
A life that is actually oriented toward the will of the Father.
So reader, sit with this question:
Am I being shaped by Christ?
Or am I just familiar with Him?
Prayer
Father,
You are holy and patient with us.
You see what we hide.
We confess how easily our hearts drift.
Often we trust You with our words, but not with our reactions.
We try to manage things You never asked us to control.
Lord, we need You and Your help.
Teach us to obey even when it costs us.
Give us discernment where we’ve been careless.
Shape our hearts, not just our behavior.
Your will, not ours.
