God speaks clearly to Moses, revealing Himself through a burning bush. Moses hears Him. Moses understands Him. And yet, almost immediately, he begins to resist.
Moses believes the problem is:
• His identity — 3:11 “Who am I?”
• His ability — 4:10 “I am not eloquent…”
• His credibility — 4:1 “What if they do not believe me?”
Moses thinks the issue is him.
But God’s answer is not:
“You are enough.”
“You’ll grow into it.”
“You’ll figure it out.”
God simply says:
Key Verse — Exodus 3:12
“Certainly I will be with you.”
I find it striking that Moses had a supernatural encounter with holiness, with the living God speaking from fire, and he still argues. Still hesitates. Still resists. And yet God remains patient. The calling is clear. The obedience is slow.
God didn’t appear to me in a burning bush, but He did convict my heart, reveal my sin, draw me to repentance, and make His call known. And still, more times than I like to admit, I want certainty instead of trusting His presence. I want clarity before obedience. I want to feel ready before I move.
Sometimes I am far more aware of my weakness than I am of God’s nearness.
I doubt. I overthink. I hesitate.
But in this passage I see something plainly: God does not call the equipped. He equips those He calls through faithfulness, obedience, and dependence on Him.
Moses’s effectiveness would not come from improved confidence, better communication, or a stronger personality. It would come from one thing: God’s presence.
And the same is true for us.
God’s work in our lives has never been built on our strength. It rests on His faithfulness. As Scripture says, “God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).
The question this passage leaves me with is uncomfortable but honest:
Am I waiting for confidence, when God has already promised His presence?

Prayer
Father,
You know how easily I hesitate when You call.
You see how often I want certainty instead of trust.
Forgive my resistance, my fear, my need for control.
Teach me to obey even when I feel unqualified.
Help me to rest in the truth that Your presence is enough.
Amen.
