Saved Words, Resisting Hearts

Israel stood at Sinai having just been delivered from slavery. They had seen the plagues. Walked through the sea. Watched God fight for them. When Moses speaks the words of the covenant, their response is immediate and unified: “We will do it.”
No hesitation.
No argument.
No resistance — at least not verbally.
But God knows what’s coming next. The golden calf isn’t far off. The words were right, but the heart had not yet learned how to surrender.
Matthew 21 shows a similar scene. Jesus enters Jerusalem, and the city erupts in praise. Scripture is quoted. Titles are shouted. Expectations are high. But many of the same voices praising Him as King will soon fall silent when He refuses to meet their terms.
They wanted a Messiah.
They did not want His authority.
That’s the danger buried in both passages: agreement without submission.
It is possible to speak truth while quietly resisting it.
To say “Lord” while holding back obedience.
To praise God while deciding where He’s allowed to rule.
God has never mistaken verbal agreement for surrender.
He does not negotiate with hearts that say yes while living no.
And this isn’t about hypocrisy in others — it’s closer than that. It shows up when obedience costs something real. When God presses on comfort, control, reputation, or security. When following Him means letting go instead of just nodding along.
God isn’t after polished words.
He’s after yielded lives.
The question Scripture leaves us with is not whether we agree with God — most of us do.
The question is whether we move when He speaks.

Father,
You see past our words and into our hearts.
You know where we speak agreement but resist obedience.
Expose what we are holding back.
Teach us to surrender, not just confess.
Let our lives respond when You speak.
