God’s People Reflect God’s Character
Leviticus 19–21; Mark 3

Key Verses

“You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.”
— Leviticus 19:2 (NASB 2020)

“Whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
— Mark 3:35 (NASB 2020)

Leviticus 19–21 keeps repeating one central idea: God’s people must reflect who God is.

“You shall be holy.”
Why?
Because God is holy.

Holiness in Leviticus isn’t abstract or mystical. It shows up in everyday life — honesty, justice, how you treat your neighbor, how you worship, how you live, how you approach God. Being set apart means living differently because you belong to Him.

God’s people are meant to resemble Him.

Then we come to Mark 3, and Jesus says something that pushes this even further. People around Him are asking about His family, and He responds:

“Whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother.”

Jesus defines belonging to God the same way Leviticus does — not by heritage, not by proximity, not by outward identity, but by obedience. God’s family is recognized by a life shaped by His will.

Leviticus says God’s people must be holy because He is holy.
Jesus says God’s people are those who actually live in submission to God.

Both passages say the same thing from different angles:
Belonging to God means reflecting His character.

That confronts something in us. It’s easy to identify with God outwardly — language, belief, association, routine. But Scripture keeps pressing deeper. God is not forming a people who merely claim Him.

He is forming a people who resemble Him.

Not perfectly.
But genuinely.

To belong to God is to be shaped by Him.
To know Him is to begin to reflect Him.
To call Him Lord is to follow His will.

Prayer

Father,
You are holy, and You call Your people to reflect Your character.
Search my life and show me where I claim to belong to You but resist Your will.
Shape my heart, my actions, and my desires so that my life reflects who You are.
Teach me to walk in obedience as one who belongs to You.
Amen.
