2.27.26 – Centered – or just Close? – Numbers 1-2; Mark 6

Centered — or Just Close?

Numbers 1–2; Mark 6

“The sons of Israel shall camp, each by his own standard… they shall camp around the tent of meeting at a distance.” — Numbers 2:2 (NASB 2020)

“And He wondered at their unbelief.” — Mark 6:6 (NASB 2020)

Numbers 1–2 is orderly. Tribes counted. Camps arranged. Everything placed around the tent of meeting. God’s presence was at the center, and the entire nation was positioned around it.

Their identity, their movement, their protection — all of it revolved around where God dwelled.

Then you turn to Mark 6 and see something uncomfortable. Jesus stands in His hometown, teaching, healing, speaking truth — and they don’t believe Him.

“He wondered at their unbelief.”

That line lingers.

You can live close to the things of God and still not trust Him. Nazareth had familiarity. They knew His name, His family, His background. But they missed who He was.

Numbers shows people physically arranged around God’s presence.

Mark shows people standing in front of God Himself — and still resisting.

Being near isn’t the same as believing.

I can structure my life around Christian things — church, Scripture, language — and still quietly hold back trust. The question isn’t whether God is at the center of the story. He is.

The question is whether He is at the center of my faith.

Prayer

Father,

Keep me from being familiar with You but distant in belief.

Center my life around Your presence in truth, not just in routine.

Strengthen my trust when doubt tries to settle in.

Amen.
